The Democratic leadership of the New Jersey legislature have agreed to try and override the veto by Governor Chris Christie (R) of a marriage equality bill passed earlier last year. If the override fails, which is what’s expected to happen, then the leadership is open to putting the issue on the November ballot in 2013, when Christie is up for re – election.
This could be a perfect storm to get out the Democratic base,” Reed Gusciora said, one of the few openly gay lawmakers in the state.
Governor Christie has said that he would support the idea of a referendum on the issue of same – sex marriage, stating:
On this issue, I am comfortable with the people of the state of New Jersey making the decision,” Christie said. “If they want to put it on the ballot, put it on the ballot.
