[dropcap2]D[/dropcap2]rag queens, military men and women, politicians and scantily-dressed parade goers, joined together to celebrate Sydney’s 35th annual gay and lesbian Mardi Gras, and to call for acceptance and equality. This years theme was “Generations of Love” that looked at the past, present and future.

“Every Mardi Gras we reflect on the battles the gay and lesbian community has fought to make the way easier for us today. It inspires us to keep going,” said the independent MP Alex Greenwich.

9,000 revellers and more than 108 floats took part in the festivities which bills itself as the world’s biggest night parade, and organizers said over 300,000 spectators turned out to watch the colorful spectacle which has its origins from a 1978 protest march. It’s also an election year in Australia, with many calling for gay marriage to be legalized, many politicians were out courting the crowds.
