The first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team, Michael Sam, was formally introduced by the St. Louis Rams at a press conference yesterday, where he fielded several questions regarding his sexual orientation.
When asked what it’s like to be the first openly-gay athlete accepted into the NFL, Sam responded with, “It’s great.”
A reporter informed Sam about the story of a 15-year old boy, who came out to his military family after watching Sam make history as the first openly gay player drafted to the NFL.
The boy’s father wrote a powerful message thanking Sam for being an inspiration and wonderful role model (read the father’s message here).
“I use little things to motivate me, make me a better player,” Sam said during his introductory press conference. “Thank God for you guys for making this all a big deal, because it’s just going to make me an even better player than I am now.”
