Luis Bambaren, an influential Catholic bishop in Peru, called openly-gay Peruvian Congressman Carlos Bruce a “faggot” for pushing a Civil Union bill that would give same-sex couples the right to a civil union in Peru.

“I am totally against (the draft Civil Union),” said Bishop Bambaren to RPP. “The law is unnecessary, you can form a partnership with another person and put the rules in the administration of property (…) Congressman Carlos Bruce is making a fool of himself with all of this, looking like a faggot in the middle of everything. He himself has said that he is gay, gay is not the Peruvian word, the word is faggot.”

The Justice Commission of Congress will be meeting Tuesday to decide the fate of a Civil Union bill which Bruce says will mandate the state to recognize the duties and rights of same-sex couples who want to share a life together, just as heterosexuals.

Back in 2011, Bambaren issued an apology after referring to gays as “faggots” when reporters asked the bishop about proposed civil union legislation. “I ask for an apology for everyone who felt offended. It is an offensive word, and [gay people] deserve respect.”
