Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy says he struggled with his sexuality for years before coming out at age 24, revealing that he would sometimes cry after hooking up with girls.
“I used to hook up with girls to be cool with the guys,” he told US Weekly. As he struggled with his true feelings, Kenworthy said that he often found his emotions getting the better of him. “There were times I would cry afterward,” he admitted. “I was at the point where I couldn’t continue to lie.”
“I was worried that I’d be known as ‘the gay skier’ … and everything else about me would be overlooked,” he explained. “I have a big fan base of young girls, and I didn’t want to disappoint them.”
His fears proved completely unfounded after he came out publicly this year — “I was blown away by the support, and it’s insane how many people have come out to me — even closeted athletes,” he said. “I feel like I’m helping battle gay stereotypes, because I compete in a rugged action sport.”
In a new haircut-interview uploaded by Kyle Krieger, Gus shared what he hopes his coming out will help accomplish.
“I hope that me coming out, and my [ESPN] cover, helps push the world — and sports especially — to a place where it isn’t a big deal to come out,” he said.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Gus revealed he’s uncut.
As for his current relationship, Gus said: “I am seeing someone, but it’s pretty new. I feel like as soon as you publicly talk about a relationship, there’s so much pressure put on it. We’re just getting to know each other.”
