A popular YouTube vlogger has revealed that he used to perform in online sex shows for money when he was a teenager.

Calum McSwiggan has gained a large online following with his videos raising awareness of LGBT issues and sex education and for his work with charities including Switchboard LGBT+ and the Terrence Higgins Trust, and his collaboration with Olympic diver Tom Daley.

“Doing gay porn when I was a teenager helped me pay for university after I was fired for being gay, but now it constantly comes back to haunt me,” McSwiggan says in his new video addressed to fans. “Having gay sex on camera was a terrible mistake, but I’ve run from this secret for too long, and it’s time to come clean. I did gay porn, and I’m sorry. I hope you guys can forgive me.”

The vlogger says he turned to performing in online “cam shows” with two male friends, which built a large following and made him thousands of dollars.

He said: “We realized how much easy money we could make… we only had to do it for a month to make enough money to pay rent for a year. We even won a cash prize for being the most popular show on the site. It was so easy to forget about the consequences of what we were doing.”

McSwiggan says his troubles began after some of the live broadcasts were recorded by third parties without his permission – and have since been re-uploaded to other porn websites.

He said: “At the time I genuinely believed we were safe because we owned the copyright to the show, and it was all live. But obviously people made illegal recordings of it and spread it everywhere, and now it comes back to haunt me every single day. Friends and acquaintances and even [viewers] keep finding these videos, and it’s a constant reminder of a time I’d rather forget.”
