Director Confirms “Power Rangers” To Feature First Gay Superhero On The Big Screen

Folks, some childhood suspicions have just been confirmed: the Yellow Ranger is gay! I know: many of you were hoping for the Pink Ranger. But the new Power Rangers movie will nonetheless feature the first gay superhero on the big screen.

Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan, played by Becky G, will be shown struggling to accept her sexual orientation.

“For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is,” director Dean Israelite told The Hollywood Reporter. “She hasn’t fully figured it out yet.”

In the film, another character assumes Trini is having “boyfriend troubles,” before realizing that perhaps she’s having “girlfriend troubles” instead. It’s a small moment, but Israelite considers this scene a “pivotal” point in the movie.

“I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”

David Yost is excited about the news. He played the original Blue Ranger on the TV show, but left after facing homophobic harassment on set.

“They really stepped up to the plate,” says Yost. “I think so many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation.”

Power Rangers opens Friday. You can watch the film’s trailer below.
