A Long Island man has been charged with a hate crime after viciously beating two transgender women Friday outside a McDonald’s in Queens, New York.
According to police, 38-year-old Patrick O’Meara began shouting “b*tches” and “f*ggots” at the two women as they attempted to enter the McDonald’s at around 4:30 pm, before he allegedly threw one woman to the ground and began punching and kicking her.
O’Meara reportedly “left the scene and returned with a cane,” which he used to hit the other woman, cutting her hand. One of the victims also suffered a fractured ankle during the attack.
When police arrested O’Meara, he told police that the women had “assaulted” him, but one witness disputed his account.
“He was harassing everybody that was walking by, but when the trans women walked by he clearly was infuriated,” Maria Munoz told DNA Info.
“We condemn this brutal hate attack and stand in solidarity with the survivors. We are horrified that transgender individuals in our community have suffered yet another hate attack,” said Bianey García, an organizer with Make the Road New York.
“Transgender immigrant women like me are part of the heart and soul of our Jackson Heights, and we will not stand idly by as our community faces discrimination and violence.”
The 38-year-old, who according to the New York Daily News has eight prior arrests on his record, is currently being held on Rikers Island after being charged with a hate crime Saturday. He is due back in court on March 31.
