When a television show becomes a global hit, translation can become an issue. Sometimes the results are downright hilarious – take, for instance, the Portuguese version of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Rather than solely relying on literal translations, the Portuguese version of the show has put its own spin on things. Most notably, it’s made “sashay away” even more brutal.
If you watch Drag Race on Netflix Portugal you will notice Mama Ru eliminates the girls with this line: “Adeus, vai-te embora, ninguém te adora.” The translation? “Bye, go away, no one loves you.”
Lisbon-based Twitter user Phi_lipi discovered this magic and shared the news with RuPaul and Michelle Visage. Fortunately more of us found it.

Some fans are already calling foul, saying Ru would never be that mean, but plenty of others just love the fact that the line is a cutthroat rhyme.
It’s also worth noting that in Brazil, where the show has been shown on several platforms, viewers have seen different translations of the same line. Makes you want to check out all the versions of Drag Race, doesn’t it?
